Only half an hour’s drive north from Finland ´s capital, Helsinki is the Tuusula Lake. Around the lake there is the city of Järvenpää and the Tuusula municipality. They have a historical background in common and are both modern, vigorous and crowing regions cherishing their cultural heritage.
In the beginning of the 20th century many masters of Finnish literature, art and music made their mark on the Tuusula Lake Road. Finland was the autonomous Grand Dutchy of Russia.
Under the pressure of the Russian Czar the national spirit among the Finnish people arouse. This can be seen in the works of the artists.
The Finnish landscape and the national epic of Finland, Kalevala also inspired the artists. Although Finland was part of Russia it had a pavilion of it’s own at the Paris World Exhibition in the year 1900. The artists Pekka Halonen, Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan – Brofeldt were all awarded there.
These artists built there homes by the Lake Tuusula. The composer Jean Sibelius also longed for the quietness of the nature. When living in Helsinki Sibelius said: “All music died inside me”.
Järvenpää and Tuusula being countryside and close to Helsinki made it possible for these artists to create and take part in the cultural life of Helsinki.
This area around the Lake Tuusula gathered together several famous artists in a unique way.
Today you can visit the homes of the composer Jean Sibelius, the painter Pekka Halonen and the author Juhani Aho and his wife the painter Venny Soldan – Brofeldt.
